Neuse River

The mighty Neuse has been reduced from a raging river to a gentle flow by the drought that spread over North Carolina. As would be the case I had my 18 to 55 mm lines on my camera which I used to take this photo. The picture that I missed was the snakes and turtles that were sunning on the river bank and old tree limbs sticking out of the water.
Abe Lincoln would have had a field day with his powerful zoom lens on this photo op.

Sunday Morning 8

Hope you are not getting bored with my Sunday Morning series of photos. Hope you understand how hard it is to get a current daily photo when you are working with a town the size of Selma. It is not like Eric in Paris, France or Ham in London, England who definitely have an advantage on me. Not putting Selma down; I love my little town. We are having two events soon, The East Coast Antiques Show on Sept. 21 & 22 and the Selma Railroad Days on Oct. 6th.
Hope to get some fresh pictures for posting from those events.
This is a picture of the Big Red Caboose at Union Station. You can see the grain mill in the background. I believe the grain mill is the tallest structure in Selma.

Sunday Morning 7

This is a sunrise picture of the Union Station. We have four passenger trains that stop in Selma each day.

Sunday Morning 6

The sun rises behind Railroad St. Antiques. This is a neat store; it was a dry goods and feed store before being renovated and turned into antiques. It encompasses about four buildings which makes for a very large area filled with antiques.

Sunday Morning 5

I am standing on the railroad track looking north down Raiford St. The sign on your right directs visitors to the antiques dealers and historic part of town. I know one of you will comment on what happened to the “T” in our Antiques sign on the side of the building.
Don’t know but will try to find out.

Sunday Morning 4

I took this picture looking east down the railroad track. The building on your left is the old Mitcheners Station/Freight Depot. This building formed the geographic center of the original corporate limits of Selma when the town received its charter in 1873. Mitcheners Station was built c. 1855.

Sunday Morning 3

This building and water tower are at the south end of Raiford St. The U.S. Post Office housed their operations in this building for a few years around 1911. This building was built c. 1870. This is a white building but the morning light reflects as a pleasing orange.

Sunday Morning 2

This picture was taken from the south end of Raiford St. The sun is illuminating the buildings on the west side of the street and the east side is in the shadows. No cars at this end of town either.

Sunday Morning 1

I have a picture that was taken of Selma, Raiford St. in 1910. I am trying to take a present day picture of the same location. Naturally, I want to get this picture of Raiford St. when a minimum number of cars line the street. Sunday morning is the perfect time to fulfill the no car requirement but the lighting conditions do not match that of the old picture. The west side of Raiford St. is well lit and the east side is in the shadows. I suspect the old picture was taken at high noon on a cloudy bright day.

Decorated Alcove 3

Our State – The incandescent light over the subject caused an orange tent. I used Photoshop to correct the temperature.

Decorated Alcove 1

We go for exercise three times a week at HealthQuest. Between the lobby and the equipment room is a walkway with four alcoves in the wall. A very talented lady Mrs. Creech decorates them throughout the season. I always stop and admire the beautiful arrangements as I enter. I took my camera the other day and took pictures that I will share with you for the next three days.

Selma’s First Charter School

The new trailers are in place for the opening day of school. This is the location of the old Richard B. Harrison School, where my children went to school. Harrison was torn down when the new middle school was built. I am sure that the children will get a good education as my children did at this location. The ingredient for a good education is not a new building and no child left behind. It takes dedicated teachers, parental help, good attitudes and motivated children.

Water Tower

This is one of Selma’s water towers and is located on Raiford Street. You can see the painting on the close up that won a water tower painting award.

September Theme Day --- Street Sign

This is the street sign for Raiford Street. Don’t know how it got the name of Raiford. I checked the history of Selma and came up with nothing. If any one out knows how it got it’s name please let us know.
