Emerald Isle Beach

Sunrise

The sunrise was outstanding this morning. I was standing on the deck of our cottage when I took this photo. 50 mm lens. I used the railing to steady the camera and prevent shake, worked pretty good. Actually, I did not take this photo. After checking I find that this photo was taken with a Canon A530. My daughter took this one.

Railroad Days

The crowds ware large at this years railroad days celebration. The attendance was estimated a 8,000 to 10’000. Now that’s a lot of people for a town the size of Selma, about 6,000. You can see from this photo that Raiford Street was jam packed with people.

The Mighty Spartans



The Smithfield-Selma High School Band was a big hit in this years parade. This band has made a big come back in the last five years. You can see from this picture the band will fill a city block. Check out the equipment trailer. We love our marching Spartans in Selma. www.sssband.org

The red hat ladies always have a float in the railroad days parade. An this year was no exception. A few years back the Amtrak from Charlotte to Selma picked up red hat ladies all along the route. The town was full of red hats that year. www.selmanc.info

Caboose Run


This run is held after the 5K runners have cleared the finish line. The start is about a block from the finish line. You can see the intensity as the race is started. In this race everyone is a winner. All participants get a blue ribbon. More photos at www.selmanc.info

New York had it’s marathon, Selma had a 5K. The race started at 8 am. With mild temperature but high humidity. This picture shows about 100 runners at the start.

Well Pulleys

Back in the old days a lot of people did not have running water in the home. They would dig a well 30 to 60 feet deep and use a chain and pulley as shown to pull a bucket of water to the top of the well.

Stancil’s Food Shop

We used to go to a full service filling station to get our gas. Now we go to a Food Shop or Convenient Mart. You can get gas, milk, bread, snacks, magazines and hot food.
The price for a gallon of gas today is $2.79.
