Surf Fishing

It takes a 4 wheel drive vehicle to drive on the sandy beach. You can see in this photo the fish cooler and rod holders are mounted on the front or rear of the vehicle. As in this photo you usually do more riding than fishing. They call it looking for the deep holes.

Road to Paradise

This is a service road that takes you from the main road to the beach at Emerald Isle NC.
If you have never been surf fishing using a 4 wheel vehicle to transport you to the fishing hole, well you don’t know what you have been missing. This is something we do in North Carolina, USA. We call it sport and it is usually done in the off season when the beach is not crowded with sunbathers. However, the beaches are becoming more restricted to vehicle traffic. I would suggest that you check in at the police station and get a permit before driving on this beach. I will try to post pictures in the coming days of surf fishing.

End of the Road

I was out taking pictures today and came across this sign. If NC Hwy 39 ends at Selma, NC, then where does it start. I pulled up a Google map and find that it starts at the Virginia/NC state line. Now we know.

The Red Hat Ladies

We always have a float filled with red hat ladies each year in the Selma Railroad Parade. And this year was no exception.
"The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and elan. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next." http://www.redhatsociety.com/

Old No. 1

This is a fire truck that has been restored by the fire department. I don’t know the year and model, but I think it was in use 42 years ago when we moved to Selma. We have a well equipped and dedicated fire department in Selma.

Emerald Isle

Just got back from the beach. We stayed a few days enjoying the rain and some sunshine. As you can see from this picture, the fishermen are out in force, pier fishing and surf fishing. I would like to thank “New Hope” for my Wi-Fi connection. Although the signal was very low, I did manage to do my posts last week from the cottage, using this unsecured connection. . And I might add the seafood was delicious.

Selma Railroad Days

This weekend is the 33rd annual Selma Railroad Days. Selma was officially chartered as a town on February 11, 1873. Selma was born as a railroad town, and our rail heritage is still evident - from our recently renovated 1924 passenger depot, which supports AMTRAK service, to our Mitchener Station, built ca. 1855, thought to be the oldest surviving train station in North Carolina. We welcome residents and visitors to join us in this annual celebration.

Theme Day: Lines

The theme day for October 2008 is 'lines'. I must say I was not prepared for this day so I am taking an easy and using an old picture. I took this picture about four years ago when we had a light snow in Selma. I was trying to show how the tracks converge in the distance. When I uploaded the files there he was right in the center of the tracks. Do railroad tracks count as lines?
